So The Story Goes...

Hayloft Books is an independent book publisher launching in 2026 with our first list coming to press in 2027. Ours is a distributed team with members working around the world but focused on bringing books to market first and primarily in the United States.

The story of Hayloft Books started with a serendipitous chance encounter with a former colleague at a coffee shop in Christchurch. I couldn't tell you what sparked a conversation about children's books between the two of us as we found a bench and talked for hours in Hagley Park. Then not a week later on a flight to Colorado, I strike up a similar conversation with a stranger, an American children's author and teacher of children's literature and writing for young people, a complete stranger, whom I now call friend.

With a shared passion, the three of us have become colleagues in this venture. But the real beginnings of this journey were in an attic and two literal haylofts on opposite sides of the globe nearly a half century ago that provided an ideal environment for books to do the magic that they are bound to do in the minds of eager, young readers.
